I find teaching interesting and rewarding. Helping students grasp a better understanding of their course work which they find difficult makes me feel like I am doing something valuable for them. I always try to break things down into every day examples. I realize that students tend to understand more when they can relate to the topic. I also believe that everybody has the potential to be intelligent, some just need to work harder than others.

Experience Summary

As a student of the City University of New York (CUNY) I worked as a tutor in my senior year. I tutored mostly in accounting courses. I also tutored in some students in finance, economics, and math courses. I graduated with a double major in Accounting & Finance in December 2008.

Teaching Style

Teaching college students has been very rewarding. I encourage active participation in discussion and groups. Each class is started with a question and answer period about any nutrition issue they might have. Most assignments have an aspect of self discovery so that each student can learn something about their nutrition status. Late work is not allowed and attendance is not taken; rather random "reflection" responses are asked to reward those that attend and to ascertain their understanding of the concepts discussed. Each student can excel when the effort is made.

As an adjunct faculty member at Brigham Young University Idaho since 1995 (it was then Ricks College), I have taught human nutrition, nutrition and the young child, introduction to foods, nutrition for the culinary arts majors, and various classes for the dietetic technician program. I earned my Dietetics degree in 1985 and have practiced as a Registered Dietitian since then. I have worked in clinical settings including hospitals, long term care, assisted living homes and fitness centers. I am a partner in the Idaho Plate Method LLC business, which created a diabetes education tool sold throughout the United States.

I use the Socratic method of teaching with a strong emphasis on homework. Students are required to summarize all chapters in the text book and write how the math topics relate to their own personal life. By using this method math becomes alive to them and consequently results in them getting a much firmer grasp on how math applies to their everyday life.

Experience Summary

I have been teaching math to college students at Mercy College for the last decade. The courses are in algebra, geometry and statistics. During the week I work as a CPA at an investment firm in their audit department. I have extensive experience in varying classroom settings and have adjusted my teaching style accordingly.

My teaching approach begins with the idea that economics is a way of thinking. My primary objective is to provide students with a set of tools that helps them attain academic success and growth, to build and expand their knowledge and critical thinking skills, and to develop as individuals. My approach encourages students to "learn by doing" through classroom activities, visual guides, interactive lessons, real world application and hypothetical situations. I also incorporate active learning through a lecture style that encourages student discussion. A good instructor motivates students to want to learn and retain the material. Stellar students benefit when instructors challenge them to move towards higher level applications of the material. Struggling students need someone who can see beyond their mistake and into their thought process. I strive to convince students they are developing valuable skills for their lives by regularly connecting the material to their everyday lives. My teaching techniques have improved with each experience I have endured. I continue to look for new ideas and technologies that can improve my teaching effectiveness. In the end, I want to share my passion for economics and learning, leaving them excited about using the skills in their own lives. My goal is to meet students where they are and take them where they need to go.

I have been a passionate tutor since my high school years. I continued tutoring in undergraduate and graduate school in subject areas from chemistry to calculus. My strengths are being able to communicate concepts clearly and in a way students can relate to.

In the last nine years, I have actively addressed the goals and available resources of diverse student populations. During college, I tutored through several organizations, including AVID, Hermanas Intimas, and the Ophelia Project. Later at San Francisco State University, I served as a Teaching Assistant for two semesters and two departments. Prior to these experiences, I have taught English, ESL, and EFL to native and non-native English speakers domestically as well as internationally. As an grade A student in many of my Basic Sciences classes during medical career, I have focused my attention to teach or tutor two essential subjects, Histology and Physiology. I enjoy teaching and feel it is rewarding to me. I love sharing my knowledge for medicine and would like to persue in acedemic teaching after becoming a doctor. Because of my profession, I've learned to be very understanding and a good listener. Teaching at medical school, my classes were entertaining but at the same time very informative and helpful to students. After finishing Basic Sciences, two years of medical school, I can integrate all the primary subjects together to help student acheive an excellent score not only in their acedemic requriements but also in the borad exam - USMLE part I.

I will retire from the Cincinnati Public schools where I served for 30 years as a teacher, and as a high school principal, on June 30, 2008. I received a doctorate in Urban Education Leadership in 2004 and am credentialed to teach English and Communications/Speech. I hold a Masters in Reading. I have won numerous awards for my teaching. My area of expertise is in writing and research. I have tutored students in all levels of English from basic to Advanced Placement. As a principal, I tutored students after school so that they could successfully pass the Ohio State Graduation Test and also helped tutor students for SAT and ACT.
