A student’s goal should be a greater understanding of how and why consumers, firms, and markets in the U.S. economy function the way they do.

I try to explain ideas in more than one way. If you can take an idea and look at from multiple angles then you have a better grasp of it. I also find that some explanations, for whatever reason, just don't work for some people and it's necessary to think of a new way to explain something. I enjoy teaching people things and I get a feeling of satisfaction when I help other people to learn.

Experience Summary

I have a master's degree in Economics and undergraduate degrees in both Mathematics and Economics. In my courses I have generally been one of the strongest students and I would regularly help my peers. I really enjoyed this informal tutoring for several reasons. I like explaining things, and I like helping out my friends. I also found that when I explained a concept to a fellow student that I developed a deeper understanding myself. For me, informal tutoring was something I enjoyed and it also helped me be a better student.

Teaching Style

I believe children today are shortchanged by our educational system. Kids need people who hold them to high standards rather than minimums. They need to feel like people believe they are worthy of success and able to attain it rather than being given built-in excuses. Therefore, my teaching style is to hold students to a high level of proficiency. I work with students in a way that builds their confidence and makes them feel like they know things others don't. There is a real "edge" that they feel when they think they might actually be "one of the smart ones" after all and it breeds both an interest and an ambition to be better.

I have Accounting, Finance, and Economics degrees or designations of emphasis as part of my educational resume. Earning those degrees takes quite a bit of mathematical and analytical knowledge and skill. I went into these degree areas because they not only met one of many areas of interest to me but I also perceived they were perhaps more useful. However, I have a great interest and an immersion based education in history, civics, and political science based areas. I've also been asked to be a contributing writer for both a political blog and a sports related blog which has allowed me to hone my writing and grammatical skills.

Teaching Style

My first step is to gain an assessment of the student by giving a variety of test questions in the subject. After locating strengths and weaknesses, I broadly cover the material, focusing more heavily on areas of deficiency. My teaching method involves teaching the material with much interaction from the students and then giving a variety of problems to solidify the material in their minds. To maintain this information, I periodically offer more practice problems, especially in areas of any difficulty.

Experience Summary

During my undergraduate years I participated in an SAT preparation program for troubled high school students. After graduating with a BA in Economics, I have worked largely in finance and banking. On the side, I set up and volunteered to provide SAT preparation for low-income high school students. I have privately tutored for other standardized tests, including the ACT, GRE, and GMAT. Teaching and tutoring remain a passion of mine and a means to enrich others.

My teaching style begins with understanding the level of each student's knowledge and learning approach. During my college years I participated in many tutorial sessions realizing that it could provide instructional help as well as social interaction with other motivated students. Briefly: high energy. I enjoy being in front of a class presenting new information to students. My teaching approach begins with the idea that economics is a way of thinking. My teaching techniques have improved with each experience I have endured. I continue to look for new ideas and technologies that can improve my teaching effectiveness. In the end, I want to share my passion for economics and learning, leaving them excited about using the skills in their own lives. My goal is to meet students where they are and take them where they need to go.

I am a graduate of the University of California, Irvine. I originally studied Chemistry and Biological Sciences for the first 3 years maintaining a high GPA. I became allergic to many base reagents used in synthesis that precluded me from completing this educational path. I completed my education in business receiving degrees in economics and business administration. I went to work with a global consulting firm implementing financial systems.
