Teaching Style

Having a minor in psychology, as well as the wonderful teachers I had been exposed to over the years, has helped me to recognize that each student had a unique learning style. I attempt to discover this style, which usually happens within one lesson, and focus in on proper teaching methods to cater to this style. I am very patient and have worked with various levels of skill and ability to intake information. I love hands on activities where possible (sciences mainly) and have a multitude of visual examples for many subjects. I hope to inspire my students to want to learn a subject they once thought was "pointless" or "boring".

Experience Summary

I began tutoring when I was in middle school. Our school designed a program where honors students were paired with students they believed to be at risk for dropping out of school before they graduated high school. I tutored one specific student for 2 years and continued to mentor him through high school. After this program I realized I loved working one-on-one with people who were truly struggling with education. I have always known education was extremely important to my own success and I wanted to help others gain knowledge towards their own goals. I tutored through college and still continue to do so. My education has given me insight into many levels of math and science as well as recognizing how to write on a scientific level due to laboratory analysis. Due to this ability to express math and science on a basic level it aides in explaining it to others who do not have a firm grasp on the topic at hand. I have tutored the following subjects at a high school level: chemistry (regular through AP), biology (up to the AP level), linear functions, calculus, statistics, physics (up to AP), algebra I & II, and trigonometry. At a college level I have tutored: chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, molecular biology, cellular biology, statistics (at the request of the professor), physics, biomedical physics, public health, anatomy, and trigonometry.

Teaching Style

I enjoy teaching and working with students. I now understand that all children learn on their own level and at their own pace. I am very easy going, but I insist that students do their homework and stay after school for extra help if they need it. I grade work off of understanding. It is not always finding the correct answer, but the process to get to the correct answer. I believe that a good teacher makes a good student and I strive to be that good teacher and student.

Experience Summary

I enjoyed tutoring while I was in college working in the math lab for three years. However, now that I have been actually teaching my very own students I have a better understanding of the basics of mathematics and I am a much better student myself.

Teaching Style

When I tutor a student, I seek first to understand the student and how he/she thinks. I find it is very important to have good rapport and communication with the student so I understand how he/she views the subject and the difficulties of it. Next I try to make "conceptual bridges" from what they know to what they are having difficulty understanding. This process usually teaches me about seeing the subject from a new point of view. I try to achieve a fine balance between guiding and directing the student’s thoughts on the topic with following the student in their own line of thinking of the subject. The student needs to learn to have confidence in his own thoughts on the subject and in his own ability to master it.

Experience Summary

Over the past four years, I have tutored high school and middle school students in math, algebra, calculus, chemistry, SAT Math, and general study skills. My preference is to tutor math, algebra, calculus, physics, physical science, chemistry, and programming. Math is the subject for which I have the greatest passion. I also participate in the homeschooling of four of my children (13, 11, 8, 6). I have mentored my 13 yr old son in Algebra I & II, Chemistry, Elementary Math, and Middle-school Physical Science, and taught elementary math to my 11, 8, and 6 year olds. Additionally, I read and review history lessons to my kids. I completed my MS in Electrical Engineering in 2006 from The University of Texas at Arlington and my BS in Electrical Engineering and a BA in Philosophy from Rice University. I have recent experience as a student having completed Cellular Biology II at St. Petersburg College in Fall 2011.

Teaching Style

I am an enthusiastic teacher who loves to share my passion for chemistry. My greatest achievement as a professor has been bringing awe and excitement to the mundane: I will never forget the student who told me that she will never look at a boiling pot of the water the same way. I am patient and considerate but demanding of hard work and respect from my students. Students learn different ways, and given the opportunity and time, a teacher should try to find the best learning environment for their students. In a classroom, this can be difficult. When tutoring one-on-one, a teacher can alter their instruction methods (visual, audio, hands-on) to optimize the student's experience. I find the philosophy of "see one, do one, teach one" works well to emphasize important points and try to incorporate this within my teaching time.

I earned a BS degree in biochemistry and did a senior thesis in organic chemistry. This inspired me to earn a PhD in biochemistry in Boston College's chemistry department. During those extensive years of education I studied many areas of chemistry and biology in depth. In addition, I excel at problem solving and research. My writing skills have been honed after years of writing research papers and theses. During the past 12 years I have taught many areas of chemistry and biochemistry at the collegiate level as well as tutored high school and college students in chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry.

Being an educator various teaching styles were implemented, but my preference is Constructivism Philosophy of teaching. This philosophy introduces various techniques and strategies fostering a student-centered learning atmosphere. This method offered a structured setting for high and low functioning students. The students initiated and created positive effective learning opportunities in groups. This has established and maintained positive relationships with students, parents, colleagues and community advocators. This has fostered a safe and learning environment.

Experience Summary

As a veteran teacher, I have managed classroom from elementary to secondary classes. I assumed diverse responsibilities from special and standard diploma students (reading, phonics, math, learning strategies, language arts, and career education). Conferred with parents weekly/ monthly, implemented various assessment tools to meet the varying academic functioning levels. Collaborated and assist in designing modified behavior plans for under achievers and potential at risk students. I am an enthusiastic educator with a passionate commitment to develop student’s achievement. I advocate challenging, enriching and innovating opportunities for exceptional education students. I am a team member who strives to effectively collaborate with all levels of staff members to establish quality relationships with students. I implemented a Community Based Instruction Program (CBI) for students seeking future employment in the community for three years.

Teaching Style

I vary my teaching style depending on the student's particular disposition. I normally allow them to dictate the pace at which I tutor without digressing from our objective. Nonetheless, my goal is to be positive impact on the student. I love to help students get to a level they did not expect they could achieve, and in the same token, I am appreciative when I am humbled by challenging problems for which I have no solution. However, when faced with such a situation, I guide the student in an appropriate direction, and let them know that I will use my own resources to discover a solution and then get back to them. Without question, my style is synonymous to what computer users refer to good programs as, "user-friendly." I am patient with my tutees and steady in my demeanor so that I can gain and hold their confidence.

I have been tutoring since my sophomore year at Rutgers University. I hold the College Reading and Learning Association Level II (CRLA) certification. I tutored Mathematics (Pre-Calculus, Calculus), Chemistry, and Physics to undergraduate students at the university. I have since tutored students in these disciplines at various levels, such as middle school and high school. I have also tutored adults in the area of Information Technology, subjects such as Introduction to Programming, Web Design, and Database Design, while studying for my IT Certification. I have since attained an MS degree in Computer Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and have been working in the IT industry for the past 4 years. I continue to enjoy tutoring and teaching others; be it students, co-workers, or family members. I believe each student has a unique way of learning, and that my job is to discover and support that learning style. Every writer has his or her own voice, and I work to empower writers to express their thoughts as clearly and powerfully as possible. My goal is not to impose information but to guide students in discovery, to support critical thinking and foster new perspectives. Writing is an intensely personal and creative act; I believe in providing a framework within which writing students can comfortably and confidently learn the strategies to speak easily on the page.

I've spent most of my life helping people learn, starting as a peer tutor in high school! I began teaching professionally as a teaching assistant in college, and since then I've taught in a wide variety of settings, including government training programs, workplace and vocational education, university, high school and community college classes, and private language schools. As a published writer, I mentor and coach writing students in fiction, nonfiction and college composition, and I've designed and developed many classes and programs to support writing students of all levels. I was a tutor for three years at the International School of Languages in Beverly Hills, working with foreign students to improve their command of English. With a BA and MA in Russian studies and a minor in English and journalism, as well as certification in adult literacy, GED and basic education and a community college credential, I have a wide range of experience in language education and writing competency.

Teaching Style

In my own studies I have learned the importance of gaining a firm grasp of fundamental knowledge in order to apply it to situations that one has never encountered. This style of learning is at the forefront of science and mathematics. During tutoring, I make sure that the students have properly attained the fundamental knowledge and avoid teaching only how to solve specific problems or answer specific homework/test questions. By tutoring in this manner, students have had great success in solving problems or answering questions on midterms and final exams. Assisting students achieve mastery in applying basic concepts to unfamiliar situations is crucial in unlocking their potential as they do not have to "memorize" their way through college, especially when it comes to science and math courses.

Having graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa Scholar from UNC-Chapel Hill, I have always achieved a level of excellence in education. I have earned two bachelor of science (B.S.) degrees in Biology and Chemistry. As a result of achieving mastery in these areas, I have tutored students in subjects such as Genetics, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics and Calculus.
