There are many majors that require students to complete an undergraduate Accounting course or two. Accounting is a very exact and precise tracking system for businesses. Taking a course which leaves no room for errors can be quite daunting for many students.

Financial Accounting will include the basic concepts and principles underlying the preparation and use of financial statements: basic accounting theory, transactional analyses, income determination, asset and liability valuation, and the preparation of financial statements.

Managerial Accounting will include topics related to the manager’s role in making business decisions: cost classification, behavior, and allocation, cost-volume-profit analysis, operating and capital budgeting, variance analysis, performance evaluation and responsibility accounting.

Cost Accounting will discuss the accumulation and analysis of cost accounting information for the valuation of products and services, internal decision making, and measurement of financial performance.

International Accounting, an upper level course, will provide an understanding of accounting issues arising from the increased globalization of today's business: comparative cross-national financial reporting; efforts to harmonize cross-national accounting standards and practices and to develop international accounting standards; taxation and transfer pricing issues; and managerial control of global operations.

I work primarily with late teenagers to adults to the elderly. I am very skilled at finding an effective way to impart information to my students, no matter what their learning style. I use the Socratic method of teaching with a strong emphasis on homework. Students are required to summarize all chapters in the text book and write how the math topics relate to their own personal life. By using this method math becomes alive to them and consequently results in them getting a much firmer grasp on how math applies to their everyday life.

Experience Summary

I have been teaching math to college students at Mercy College for the last decade. The courses are in algebra, geometry and statistics. In my business career one of my most important tasks was to train individuals and groups in the use of computer software. I found it most rewarding to see individuals become more knowledgeable and thus, be able to perform their jobs more efficiently. Another task I performed was as a liaison or translator between technical people and business system users. I was charged with explaining the needs of business users to the technical staff. This required patience and interpersonal skill, so that, all parties became sufficiently knowledgeable to enable a successful result. Both my children had learning disabilities. This necessitated that I insure that homework assignments were completed. I also tutored my children in a wide variety of subjects (spelling, English, math) to supplement the efforts of their teachers. This required a commitment to the learning process and accommodation to their individual learning styles.

I believe children today are shortchanged by our educational system. Kids need people who hold them to high standards rather than minimums. They need to feel like people believe they are worthy of success and able to attain it rather than being given built-in excuses. Therefore, my teaching style is to hold students to a high level of proficiency. I work with students in a way that builds their confidence and makes them feel like they know things others don't. There is a real "edge" that they feel when they think they might actually be "one of the smart ones" after all and it breeds both an interest and an ambition to be better.

I have Accounting, Finance, and Economics degrees or designations of emphasis as part of my educational resume. Earning those degrees takes quite a bit of mathematical and analytical knowledge and skill. I believe teaching is communicating and reaching the child on their level. The key is to understand we all learn in different ways. Successful teachers reach out in several ways to ensure the child will succeed.
