Teaching Style

In me there’s a wonderful fulfillment when helping someone with the gift of education. In fact the education I experienced changed my life significantly for the better. Naturally I want to give back. I believe anyone, with the right motivation and enough time, can learn anything. I try to motivate while tutoring by using real life examples and providing reasons for overcoming any difficulties in the learning process. I’ve encountered a lot of success in transferring understanding of subjects. I contribute that to a talent for communication. Good communication skills go a long way.

Experience Summary

While earning a Bachelor in Accounting and a Masters of Accounting, I learned basic educational necessities. These skills include math, science, English, and grammatical structure. While attending Florida A&M University I tutored many students in the fundamentals of accounting and math. After graduating with an undergraduate degree I became a substitute teacher for Broward County Public Schools. While substituting I was able to experience a variety of schools in Broward. At a local elementary school I was able to teach a third grade class for three months.

I am extremely sensitive to the individual needs of each child. At first, I work with my students at their success level so they start to build self-confidence and a sense of mastery. Then, I will begin to challenge my students, without frustrating them but stimulating them, so they want to learn more and more. This helps them to become more independent learners. I utilize all modalities to stimulate my students five senses. I also encourage them to use abstract thinking to find their own solutions and think ' out of the box '.

I recently retired from the NYC Dept. of Education. I was a Special Education Teacher for the past 25 years. I graduated with Departmental Honors in Psychology, as well as receiving a license for teaching both Elementary and Special Education. My dual educational background has enabled me to work on emotional/learning issues with children(eg-self esteem, behavior modification, attention deficit disorders, etc.), as well as all academic subjects. I am well versed in writing I.E.P.'s, case studies, behavioral programs, lesson plans, long and short term learning objectives and progress reports. I worked in a psychoeducational setting and am well practiced in communicating with students, parents, administrators, therapists and other educators. I feel that open communication is extremely important among all involved with each child, in order to give the child a feeling of security and consistency. Each child is an individual with different learning needs and styles. It is up to the educator and team, to help them reach their full learning potential.

I am passionate about teaching, and love to work with school age and college level students to help them achieve their academic goals. I am available to help students learn and grow academically. My teaching style is facilitative, patient, easygoing and helpful. I strive to create a productive, safe, and caring environment for my students, where their learning experience is nurtured and productive. Having earned two bachelors degrees (A Bachelor of Education in Secondary Education and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science/Mathematics), and a Master of Business Administration degree (GPA of 3.81/4.00), I have the academic and professional competencies which enable me to produce positive outcomes in a teaching environment. During the last 2 years, I have tutored students in Statistics, Mathematics, Biostatistics, and English. Communication and expectations are the top priorities in my repertoire of teaching strategies. I am able to communicate a sense of self-esteem in my students tempered with humor. They know I value them as human beings. In my experience young people are willing to live up to the expectations a good teacher demands. I use a direct, no nonsense approach and have found it extremely successful in all teaching environments.

Experience Summary

After having lived in Germany, teaching ESL in a middle school, I returned to the United States to teach in the Irving Independent School District in Irving, Texas. During that time I taught German, French and Spanish to middle and high school students. Subsequently, I was offered a teaching position for the Department of Dependent Schools, which is managed by the Department of Defense Education Activity. I taught Study Skills and German for three years in the Ramstein area in Germany. I then transferred to the United Kingdom where I taught these modern languages on an air base near Cambridge. Presently I am teaching ESL to businessmen in the Tampa Bay area as a free lance contractor. Having acquired skills in three foreign languages by three different learning methods, I have a good understanding of language acquisition as well as language usage.

I am a very energetic person and try to bring that to everything that I do. I love helping students learn and discover new interests. I understand that people learn in different ways and I am capable of adjusting to each child's style. I am personally a visual and tactile learner so that is where I typically start and then adjust to each child.

I enjoy helping students who struggle with Mathematics. As a tutor, it is all about being patient and finding the right approach to teach the students. I believe that every student has the capacity to excel in any subject but they must believe in their abilities. Therefore, tutoring is not only teaching the subject but it is also about assuring the student that he will succeed.

Experience Summary

Mathematics was always my favorite subject since elementary school. When I entered college, it made sense to major in mathematics. Thus, I have earned a Bachelor degree in Mathematics. During my college years, I tutored college algebra, pre-algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus to my peers and younger students struggling in math. Since then I have also helped several high school students in their algebra I and II classes, trigonometry, and AP Calculus. Seeing a student improve their grades and knowing that they feel better about themselves and their accomplishments is extremely satisfying.
