Teaching Style

I enjoy tutoring and working with students. I feel that I am a friendly, patient, and calm tutor. I put students at ease, help them to feel comfortable, and let them know they can ask questions. I can explain things in an informal, easy-to-understand manner, which is especially helpful for students who have trouble in school. My flexible teaching style helps me adapt and customize tutoring sessions to each individual student because learning is not one size fits all. I like to find things that the student understands and/or can relate to in order to explain and explore difficult concepts and topics.

In addition to tutoring during high school, I have worked at an independent local tutoring company and at the local Huntington Learning Center since I've graduated college. As an English major, avid reader, and proficient writer, my specialty is English and SAT Verbal, but I can also tutor in other subjects. I've helped younger students with their homework and studying in subjects such as 8th grade science, 5th grade math (for a student in a Spanish immersion program), middle school and high school history/social studies and many others. Currently, I'm studying SAT math in order to be more adept at tutoring in various mathematics.

I love to teach. Teaching is my passion. I make complex theories into simple understanding concepts. I give lot of emphasis on basic fundamentals. During my Undergrad, I taught Math, Physics and Chemistry for Junior and Senior High students As a teaching assistant for 1 year at Clemson university, I taught Mechanics of Materials course for Sophomore class For the past 3 years, I've been tutoring Math (Algebra, Calculus, Advanced Integral calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry), Physics(Mechanics, Dynamics, Energy concepts, Thermodynamics, Electricity) and Chemistry(Inorganic, Organic & Analytical) for Junior, Senior High and Engineering level students.

My teaching style has been, for the most part, dictated by student response. I am comfortable teaching in a traditional lecture format, in a format that uses a cooperative learning approach exclusively, or in a hybrid format. The goal is for effective learning to take place, and I believe my strongest quality is to be able to adapt in such a way that best helps students reach their academic goals.

Experience Summary

For eight years, I taught freshman and sophomore-level mathematics courses at Arizona State University. These courses included College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Finite Mathematics, and Elementary Mathematics Theory. Additionally, I have tutored students in these courses both in the Mathematics Department Tutor Center, and on my own personal time.

My teaching style is patient and thorough. I like to think of myself as a guide for students who are having difficulty in areas of math and science. I urge them to do the work, answer the questions, and ultimately earn the rewards of learning and discovery.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Chicago, a Masters degree in Physics from the University of Wisconsin, and am currently writing my doctoral thesis in Physics at the University of Wisconsin. I have enjoyed the opportunity to tutor math and science on a number of occasions at the U of C and UW, in small groups and one-on-one. I have also taught introductory physics courses at the University of Wisconsin, Driscoll Catholic High School, and the National University of Health Science. Years of teaching and research in science and math have made me very comfortable explaining and teaching these subjects.

I believe that with patience and the right tools, children and adults can learn anything. Learning is fun and adventurous once students identify their learning styles. My goal is to guide students through the learning process so that they can problem-solve on their own, away from tutors/teachers.

I have been fortunate to earn degrees and work in the fields of education and science. I want to help others achieve their dreams in pursuing careers especially in math and science. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA in undergrad/valedictorian, Class of 1994. As the eldest of 5 children, I have always tutored relatives. In the last nine years, I have actively addressed the goals and available resources of diverse student populations. During college, I tutored through several organizations, including AVID, Hermanas Intimas, and the Ophelia Project. Later at San Francisco State University, I served as a Teaching Assistant for two semesters and two departments. Prior to these experiences, I have taught English, ESL, and EFL to native and non-native English speakers domestically as well as internationally. English was not my first language, and I use my own experiences with language and culture to communicate successfully with students from all backgrounds. Furthermore, I am very comfortable with online learning platforms as I have not only taken countless online courses but have also assisted professors in further developing and improving their online courses. I have taken teaching as my profession. As a parent I love to help the young ones achieve their goals. I feel delighted when I see my students excel in life. Science, and especially Mathematics, is not as difficult as some people think; it is just a matter of getting the fundamentals. Here presentation of these fundamentals is very important.

Experience Summary

After high school, I went to a teacher training college and graduated after three years. I was a Mathematics and Science teacher for 7 years before I went to Canada for my B.Sc. in Physics. I then went to Howard University where I did my Master of Engineering in Civil (Environmental) Engineering and later my Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering at Ahmadu Bello University. I have tutored a lot of Mathematics and all science related courses. I have published many papers in professional journals. I also belong to many professional science based organizations. I have over twenty five years of University teaching experience. At present I am a part time Math tutor at Saint Augustine's College.
